NEWPORT, R.I. — Gen. Dan Caine, the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, made an unannounced stop at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport on Tuesday, meeting with the students, faculty and staff of the Navy school.
Caine ranks as the most senior officer in the U.S. armed forces and serves as the president’s chief military adviser. The Department of Defense said he spoke about leadership and about what that advisory job involves, and that college leaders briefed him on the school’s work in support of American forces across every branch.
He flew into Quonset State Airport in North Kingstown on Tuesday morning aboard a large government plane. A motorcade met the aircraft, and the arrival caught the eye of people near the airfield, but the trip had not been announced ahead of time. The delegation later boarded the government jet again at Quonset for the flight out.
The Newport college calls itself the Navy’s Home of Thought. It says it has educated more than 24,000 American and foreign military officers, along with hundreds of senior federal civilians, through programs that range from a 10-month resident course to short leadership classes.
Wargaming is a core part of the school. Its Wargaming Department dates to 1887 and is now housed in the Center for Naval Warfare Studies, where simulations covering sea, space and cyber conflict help shape defense plans for commands and agencies.
Quonset has drawn high-level visitors before. Former President Joe Biden landed there in 2021, then took a helicopter on to the Coast Guard Academy.
