PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — The Newport Gulls are keeping their youth winter baseball clinics close to home this year, opening registration this week for four Sunday sessions inside Aquidneck Island Sports, a Portsmouth training building that just opened.
The program, now in its sixth year, adds a fourth session to the schedule. Each runs from 9 a.m. to noon, on three December Sundays, the 6th, 13th and 20th, plus Jan. 3, at 1055 East Main Road, a new indoor building for baseball and softball.
Any child from 8 to 12, boy or girl and at any level, can sign up. Coaches will work with players on pitching, hitting and fielding. The full set of four sessions costs $450, and a single session is $125. Every player gets a Gulls T-shirt and a personal evaluation from the coaching staff.
One of the coaches is a familiar name on the island. John Mass grew up in Portsmouth, pitched for the Gulls this past summer, plays at Florida Atlantic University and is set to return to the Gulls in 2027. This will be his second winter coaching the clinics, and his first doing it in his hometown.
Also returning for year two is South Kingstown native Ben Brutti, a righty who now pitches in the Cincinnati Reds system. Additional coaches are still to be announced by the club.
The clinics are one of several off-season efforts for the summer collegiate club. The Gulls also raised $2,830 for the Rhode Island Social Skills Academy this year through sales of their 2026 Inclusion Jerseys, and the team is again up for a best family activity award. Registration for the winter clinics is open on the team’s website.
