NEWPORT, R.I. — Rogers High School is bringing one of its own graduates back to lead, with Newport Public Schools naming Christine M. Dunbar as the school’s newest assistant principal.
Dunbar starts at Rogers on Nov. 2. She has spent more than 17 years in public education and is currently based at Providence’s Classical High School. Her jobs there have ranged from teaching math and computer science to coaching other teachers and leading a department.
The district said her work has centered on stronger classroom teaching and support for teachers, along with help for multilingual learners, academic intervention programs and closer ties between schools and families. Her experience also takes in curriculum writing and school improvement efforts.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Villanova University, master’s degrees at the University of Rhode Island and Brown University, where her coursework covered cross-cultural studies and teaching English as a second language, and an Education Specialist degree in educational leadership at Bridgewater State University. Her administrator training included a 500-hour internship served at Attleboro High School in Massachusetts.
Rogers Principal Robert E. Young Jr. said Dunbar pairs instructional leadership with experience backing teachers, and that her history as a Rogers student gives her a personal tie to the school and the Newport community.
At Rogers, Dunbar will work alongside administrators, teachers, students and families on academic performance and student engagement.
