NEW LONDON, Conn. — Salve Regina, the college football team from Newport, R.I., built a 34-6 halftime cushion and cruised past Coast Guard 47-28 on Saturday afternoon at the academy, spoiling the Bears’ last home date of the regular season.
The Seahawks, based in Newport, R.I., now stand 6-3, with a 3-3 mark in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference games. That means Salve Regina has won six of its nine games this fall. Coast Guard fell to 4-5, and its record against league foes is now 2-4.
Neither offense moved early, with both teams going three-and-out on their opening possessions. Salve Regina broke through with just over five minutes left in the opening quarter on a 47-yard touchdown, then added a second scoring pass before the quarter ended for a 13-0 edge.
Coast Guard found some rhythm in the second quarter and got on the board, but Salve Regina answered with three more touchdowns and recovered an onside kick to take command before the break. By quarter, the Seahawks put up 13, 21, 10 and 3 points.
The Bears opened the third quarter with a long drive capped by a 25-yard scoring pass to pull within 34-13. Salve Regina replied with two more third-quarter touchdowns. Coast Guard turned to a backup quarterback late in the third, and he led two fourth-quarter scoring drives, but the Seahawks added one last touchdown with under five minutes to go.
The Seahawks scored on long passes throughout the afternoon, while the Bears needed a late push through the air to make the final margin respectable. Coast Guard closes its regular season next Saturday against Merchant Marine in the Secretaries Cup at Audi Field in Washington.
