BRISTOL, R.I. — The Tiverton/Bay View field hockey co-op is the Division III champion in Rhode Island after a 1-0 win over Chariho/Prout on Sunday, and one first-quarter goal settled it. The title game was played on the Roger Williams University campus in Bristol.

Leslie Ramos scored with 5:30 left in the opening quarter, finishing a feed from Ava Macfarlane. From there the Newport County co-op kept the ball for long stretches after halftime and earned several penalty chances in the fourth quarter as it ran out the clock on the title.

The result capped a run of tight wins. Tiverton/Bay View, the No. 2 seed, got to the final with a 1-0 overtime win against Toll Gate in Tuesday’s semifinal round. Chances were scarce for both teams that night. Tiverton/Bay View thought it had scored late in the third quarter, but officials waved the goal off for an infraction, and the game stayed scoreless until the Tigers finally found the net in overtime.

Chariho/Prout entered Sunday as the top seed after a first-round bye and a 1-0 semifinal win over No. 4 Smithfield. The Chargers, in their second season as a co-op, were chasing the first field hockey title in Chariho history and the first championship appearance for Prout.

The final was the third meeting of the fall between the two rivals, and all three went to Tiverton/Bay View by a single goal. The Tigers won the regular-season games 1-0 and 2-1, then did it again with the championship on the line.

For a co-op built from two Newport County communities, the title rewards a season spent winning close games. The Tigers finished the semifinal and the final without allowing a goal, and their defense never let Chariho/Prout break through in any of the three meetings between the teams this fall.
