NEWPORT, R.I. — Newport Hospital has been rated the second-best hospital in Rhode Island in the 2027 edition of America’s Best-in-State Hospitals, trailing only Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Only five Rhode Island hospitals earned a spot. Westerly Hospital placed fifth, The Miriam Hospital in Providence fourth and South County Hospital in Wakefield third.

The ranking was put together by Statista, a data research company that works worldwide. Hospitals were graded on four measures: quality data, reputation and recommendations, patient feedback, and a Statista survey on how well each one puts patient-reported outcome measures to use. Those measures are standard questionnaires patients fill out about how well they function and their quality of life.

No other hospital operates in Newport County. Dr. Tenny Thomas, its president and chief medical officer, said the result reflects hospital quality and patient experience and credited staff across every department.

The hospital belongs to Brown University Health, the nonprofit system once called Lifespan. Three of its hospitals made the state list: Newport, The Miriam and Rhode Island Hospital. Sarah Frost, who runs hospital operations for the system and is president of Hasbro Children’s as well as Rhode Island Hospital, said the showing means Rhode Islanders can find strong care close to home.

Maria Ducharme, president of The Miriam Hospital and the system’s chief quality executive, credited physicians, nurses and staff at her hospital for its spot on the list.
