NEWPORT, R.I. — Families looking for a Halloween daytime outing in Newport can head to the Newport Art Museum on Saturday, Oct. 31, when the museum opens its doors at no charge for a celebration built around Dia de los Muertos.

The free program at 76 Bellevue Ave. runs from noon until 3 p.m. Visitors can make their own art, listen to stories, join a scavenger hunt, hear music and show off Halloween costumes. Activities draw on the holiday and on the exhibitions now on view, and the museum supplies every material. Organizers ask guests to RSVP, though it is not required.

Getting there is free as well. A free Viking Trolley shuttle makes stops at three spots in the city, Equality Park, Conexion Latina and the Martin Luther King Jr. center, with the first pickup set for 11:45 a.m. and loops running off and on through the afternoon.

The museum, founded in 1912, is one of the longest-running combined art museum and art school programs in the United States, and it has kept its doors open without a break for more than a century. Its collection holds roughly 3,000 works, centered on American and contemporary art and reaching from the 18th century to today.

The event is one of a handful of options on a quieter weekend across Newport County, where many families will be busy with trick-or-treating and costume parties after several weekends packed with fall events.

Because the program is free and open to everyone, it offers an easy option for parents who want a creative stop with younger children before evening trick-or-treating begins around the city. Costumes are welcome, and families can drop in any time during the three-hour window rather than arriving at a set start.
